Commercial Solar Case Study - Unity Temple Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, MO

Business Case

How can a church promote sustainability and reduce its operating cost?

Background

Unity Temple, located in Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, MO embarked on an initiative to reduce its energy usage in 2015. Several options were considered such as lighting and HVAC equipment. Initially solar was not considered due to the initial cost.

Solution

Utilize a Solar Services Agreement (SSA) to cover the cost of a solar project. An SSA is an agreement that allows for a third-party (developer) to enter into an agreement to provide a series of services for a set period of time, including the installation and operation of solar equipment. IRS regulation set forth criteria which governs these agreements and allows a third-party, with a tax appetite, to leverage the tax incentives to finance a project. SSA’s allow school districts, governmental bodies and other tax-entities to participate in solar.

Unity Temple’s annual savings from the 75 KW solar array averages $7,200 annually. Under the terms of an SSA, Unity Temple will take assume ownership through a buyout of the array after year 6 and enjoy continued savings from solar.

I have had the pleasure of working with Bob for several years. In the beginning, Bob taught me important basics. Over a short period of time I was equipped with the language and tools to develop projects which resulted in more than 7 million dollars of sales. Over the past 5 years Bob has been a tremendous resource handling everything from initial ROI analysis to system design, rebate/ utility paperwork, city permitting, material sourcing, and final project paperwork. I can truly say Solar Design Studios played a major role in my success.

A sincere Thank You!
