Solar Project Experience

3 – 25 KW Solar PV Systems were installed on the 3 buildings which comprise the campus. Each system is comprised of 100-250 Watt Modules, 2 – Power One Inverters and Renusol VS racking for standing seam metal roofs. The systems were designed for KCPL Solar and are leased to the City of Kansas City. Mark One Electric was the solar installer.

DuraComm,, a manufacturer of AC to DC power supplies and supplier of LED lighting equipment located in Kansas City, MO, embarked on a strategic business initiative to make its 45 year old building more energy efficient. One major project involved the design and installation of a 24.80 KW Solar PV system, which is designed to produce more than 34,000 KWH of energy per year and offset the building’s lighting load of 31,500 KWH. The building is retrofitted with DuraComm LED lighting equipment.

The system is comprised of 108 – 230 Watt Panels, 3 – SMA Inverters and self ballasting racking, with a 20 degree tilt optimized for summer time power production. The project’s unique design challenge involved the development of a suitable racking solution to accommodate the structural issues specific to the roof. The system was installed and commissioned at the end of 2011.

The project’s financial benefits analysis includes a projected 25 year utility savings of $193,883, Return-On- Investment (ROI) of 4.8 years and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 14.3%. The KCPL Solar rebate of $2.00 a watt and Federal Investment Tax Credit of 30%, as well as MACRS Depreciation Schedule with 100% bonus depreciation contributed to developing the business justification to invest in solar.

The Solar Design Studio provided services to HOK Architects of St. Louis, to design an off grid Solar PV and Wind system for an orphanage. The goal of the project is to model a replicable approach for sustainable construction and operations that respects the local ecology, culture and traditions and achieves LEED Platinum certification.

Designed around FIT goals, to ICC International Building Code 2009 and to be LEED Platinum, the project has developed several strategies to make the project as passive and as sustainable as possible.

HOK’s design solution is a three-story, L-shaped structure to serve as the main building on the site. Kitchen, dining, an open multipurpose area and administration space will be located on the first floor, with counseling and lodging for children, staff and guests on the floors above.
A separate, two-story block will house administrative offices and a training area. The building is organized around a central courtyard, the focus of social life, and is flanked by kitchen, dining and training spaces.

The design responds to the dense urban condition and prevailing westerly trade winds by organizing all of the spaces, one room thick in a cupping form (like a catcher’s mitt) facing east. The rooms have a tall aspect ratio, and will have ceiling fans to provide comfort during warm and humid still-air nights.

The Smithville Area Fire Protection District recently completed the construction of a new fire station at 18315 Collins Road near Smithville, MO.   The station was financed through a public bond offering.  In order to prudently manage the cost of operating the new station, several energy efficiency measures such solar pv and a geothermal system were incorporated into the facility.  The business case was to maximize energy production, which maximizes savings.  A 53.01 KW system comprised of premium solar modules from SolarWorld and SolarEdge Inverters were specified for this project.  This particular system was designed to produce between 8-10% more energy than a conventional solar pv system.   Year one savings is estimated at $9,069 as well as $255,241 ins savings over the 25 year life of the system.How A Fire District Can Reduce Its Operating Cost of a Fire Station  

Worldwide Energy, Kansas City’s premier energy efficiency solutions provider to business, collaborated with the Solar Design Studio to turn an under used parking structure into a revenue producing asset. The project involved installing a 119 KW Solar PV array on the top level of the parking structure located at Manor Square, Pennsylvania and Westport in the Westport area.

The 119.32 KW array is comprised of 628 tenKsolar 190 Watt modules, with advanced reflector technology which boost energy production by more than 50% when compared to conventional solar arrays. This array is specifically designed to produce 203, 200 KWH of energy annually. Compare this to a conventional solar array which will produce 139, 300 KWH annually. This is 69% difference. Compared to a conventional solar array, the increase energy production improves the ROI period by more then 12 months.

The Solar Design Studio was responsible for the site survey, energy production, technology selection, design and project consultation. Project was completed in under 6 weeks.

Homoloy Solar utilized the Solar Design Studio to design a 100 KW Solar PV for installation over a retention pond. The array is comprised of 528 tenKsolar 190 watt modules and utilize advanced reflector technology to boost energy production. The array made use of under utilized space and designed to produce 182, 000 KWH a year and when compared to a conventional array that produces 139,200 KWH a year, a difference of 27%.

A 25 KW Grid Tied Commercial Solar PV System comprised of 100 – 250 Watt Modules, 100 Enphase Microinverters and racking from Schletter was designed and installed on the roof of this new facility in August of 2013. The design challenge of the project was to optimize the use of a North facing standing seam metal roof, while accounting for wind loads. Schletter’s Windsafe racking was selected as the best solution to mitigate the impact of wind on the array. Design, project management and commissioning services were provided to DuraComm Solar which leases the system to Samuel R Rodgers.

This 75 KW array is the largest above roof structure in Kansas City which is installed at 310 W. 19th Terrace. The system was approved for operation in February of 2012. The structure is sloped at 20 degrees, optimized for summer power production and is designed to produce more than 100,000 KWH annually. The amount of energy produced from this system should provide the building with nearly 100% offset of energy usage.

Services were provided to Homoly Solar,, the solar integrator. The support structure innovation was designed and developed by Homoly Solar. The electrical and racking design were the responsibility of the Solar Design Studio. The design of the system consists of 330 – 230 Watt Panels, 6 Fronius 3 Phase Inverters and CreoTecc racking from Sessions Solar. A clampless racking system was used to mitigate issues with the panels becoming loose over time due to flexing of the structure. This is a problem with conventional clamp down racking systems. The interconnection to the electric utility was accomplished with a supply side tap to each of the 4 meters serving the building.
